SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 39

Requesting the Commissioner of the Division of Highways name that certain bridge which crosses over U. S. Route 119 and Lefthand Fork, on Interstate 79 near Hellford, as the "McQuain Brothers Bridge".

Whereas, First Sgt. John McQuain served twenty-seven months in the South Pacific, being attached to the anti-aircraft unit and the fifty caliber machine gun unit. He later became a member of the Regimental Combat Team, one of the elite fighting units of the Army; and

Whereas, Ten McQuain brothers, in addition to First Sgt. John McQuain, served in various fields of service:

Sgt. Ralph McQuain served in the Air Force from 1942 to 1945;

Seaman 1-C Clyde McQuain served in the Coast Guard from 1943 to 1945;

S-Sgt. Jack McQuain served in the Army as an infantryman from 1942 to 1945, attached to the Regimental Combat Team, one of the elite fighting units of the Army, and holder of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart;

Cpl. Roy McQuain served in the Army as an infantryman in 1942 and was a German POW for twenty-six months;

Coxswain Herbert McQuain served in the Navy in 1943 and reenlisted from 1946 to 1950;

Seaman 1-C Paul McQuain served in the Navy Sea-Bees from 1939 to 1946;

Seaman 1-C Gene McQuain served in the Navy from 1946 to 1948;

PFC. Porter McQuain was a combat veteran of the Korean War and served from 1948 to 1950;

George McQuain served in the Navy for twenty years and received the Purple Heart;

T-Sgt. Donald Noe served in the 8th Air Force as a radioman;

Earl McQuain attempted to join the service with his brothers but was deferred; and

Whereas, The McQuain Brothers are believed to hold a national record for the amazing total of eleven brothers who served this country, they being decedents of a long line of West Virginians from Roane County; and

Whereas, The service and dedication of the McQuain brothers is deserving of high honor and gives them a place in American history; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That the Legislature hereby requests the Commissioner of the Division of Highways designate that certain bridge which crosses over U. S. Route 119 and Lefthand Fork, on Interstate 79 near Hellford, as the "McQuain Brothers Bridge"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Commissioner of the Division of Highways is requested to have made and be placed, at either end of the bridge, signs identifying the bridge as the "McQuain Brothers Bridge"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Commissioner of the Division of Highways and to the capitol press corps.
